Skin rash: symptoms, causes, and treatment

In everyday life, we touch all kinds of objects and, without being aware of it, we come into contact with many microorganisms. These organisms can sometimes cause slight eruptions on the skin. This type of reddish discoloration of the skin that reacts to allergens is known as a skin rash.

The skin is the first defense barrier we have against any external factor. That is why it is so important that we pay attention to it and devote time to its proper care. Below you will find out what a skin rash is, how it occurs and what we can do to prevent it.

What is a skin rash?

A condition known as a skin rash is usually reddening of the skin with minor changes such as pimples or hives at certain areas.

There are various factors that can cause this type of skin eruption. Depending on the cause, color and how it manifests itself, we can talk about two types of disorder:

  • Contact dermatitis.
  • Seborrheic changes

Contact dermatitis

It is a skin condition that occurs when a person suffers from an allergic reaction to some chemical or physical factor. Currently, every product that we include for our use contains ingredients that can cause changes and damage to the skin . Here are some examples:

  • Soaps
  • Creams, cosmetics and perfumes.
  • Cleaning products.
  • Anxieties.

This type of dermatitis, in turn, falls into two categories: contact and allergic. Its symptoms are identical, but differ in the course of the disease and its pathophysiology.

Seborrheic dermatitis

According to a study published in the Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology, this type of dermatitis affects between 1% and 3% of the healthy population. Therefore, it can be said that seborrheic dermatitis is a frequent and recurrent inflammatory disease.

Pink to red oily skin with yellowish peeling of the skin is seen in those affected . The disturbed functioning of the sebaceous glands in this disease contributes to the development of the disease.

Skin rash – its symptoms and causes

Often the symptoms are characterized by the appearance of pimples and itchy skin at a specific location on the body. There may also be burning, itching, erythematous spots, papules, vesicles and localized blisters.

However, seborrheic dermatitis in particular appears as oily and yellowish skin. These types of changes most often affect the area around the mouth, eyelids and eyebrows, as well as the scalp and the chest.

Some people are more prone than others to develop a skin rash. It depends on factors such as age, gender and genetic predisposition. The location of skin lesions also affects the degree of nuisance of this disorder.

A skin rash can appear suddenly under the influence of various causative factors. The most common are infections with microorganisms, as well as reactions to allergens or chemicals in fabrics, cleaning products and cosmetics.

In contrast, contact dermatitis occurs when the skin is damaged by a chemical. However, an allergy occurs due to a hypersensitivity reaction that occurs 48 hours after exposure to the allergen.

Some products that cause such irritation in contact dermatitis include corticosteroids, antihistamines, antibiotics, and sunscreen.

On the other hand, seborrheic dermatitis tends to be caused by fungi and a genetic predisposition. This is the case, for example, with Malassezia yeasts, fungi on the skin that produce irritating metabolites that cause inflammation.

It has also been shown that patients suffering from other diseases, such as HIV or after organ transplantation, are more susceptible to this type of skin lesion.

Treatment of skin rash

One of the most effective ways to prevent skin rashes is to know what compounds trigger your allergies. This will avoid harmful contact with these substances. Although there is often a problem in this context, which is the difficulty of deciphering the nomenclature of the chemical components on the label.

First and foremost, dermatologists and allergists should consider which compounds are most likely to cause allergies, and which are most common in personal care products and medications. As a result, their diagnosis will be more direct and faster.

In summary, the type of skin rash that occurs depends on the product, the microorganism, or the physical factor causing it. Therefore, the choice of treatment will also depend mainly on the causative factor.
